Lovis CORINTH was born in Tapi­au in East Prus­sia in 1858. Attend­ed the art acad­e­my in Königs­berg and stud­ied at the acad­e­my in Munich with Franz Defreg­ger and Lud­wig von Löfftz. 1884 attend­ed the Académie Julian in Paris for a few months. 1888 move to Berlin. From 1891 in Munich where he joined the “Munich Seces­sion” in 1892. In 1893 he found­ed the artist group “Free Asso­ci­a­tion” with fel­low artists. 1901 he moved to Berlin and opened a paint­ing school. Joined the “Berlin Seces­sion”. In 1911 Corinth suf­fered a stroke that par­a­lyzed him on one side. From 1919 Corinth with­drew from big city life and set­tled at Walchensee. As a lead­ing expo­nent of Ger­man Impres­sion­ism, he grad­u­al­ly turned to Expres­sion­ism from 1911 onwards. The paint­ings of his lat­er peri­od in par­tic­u­lar are char­ac­ter­ized by a free brush­stroke and increas­ing dis­so­lu­tion of the rep­re­sen­ta­tion­al. Lovis Corinth died in Zand­voort in Hol­land in 1925.
