Lovis CORINTH was born in Tapiau in East Prussia in 1858. Attended the art academy in Königsberg and studied at the academy in Munich with Franz Defregger and Ludwig von Löfftz. 1884 attended the Académie Julian in Paris for a few months. 1888 move to Berlin. From 1891 in Munich where he joined the “Munich Secession” in 1892. In 1893 he founded the artist group “Free Association” with fellow artists. 1901 he moved to Berlin and opened a painting school. Joined the “Berlin Secession”. In 1911 Corinth suffered a stroke that paralyzed him on one side. From 1919 Corinth withdrew from big city life and settled at Walchensee. As a leading exponent of German Impressionism, he gradually turned to Expressionism from 1911 onwards. The paintings of his later period in particular are characterized by a free brushstroke and increasing dissolution of the representational. Lovis Corinth died in Zandvoort in Holland in 1925.
