Max ERNST was born in Brühl near Cologne in 1891. 1909 to 1914 stud­ied art his­to­ry, phi­los­o­phy and psy­chol­o­gy at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Bonn. Max Ernst, who drew and paint­ed from his youth, nev­er attend­ed an art acad­e­my. At the age of 22 first par­tic­i­pa­tion in the exhi­bi­tion “Rhen­ish Expres­sion­ists”. From 1914 to 1918 mil­i­tary ser­vice on the West­ern Front. In 1919 the artist found­ed the Cologne Dada group togeth­er with Arp and Baargeld. 1922 Joins Breton’s group. 1925 Par­tic­i­pa­tion in the first sur­re­al­ism exhi­bi­tion in Paris. 1939 Per­se­cu­tion as an ene­my alien and intern­ment until 1940. In 1941 he escapes to the USA. From 1943 the artist lives main­ly in Ari­zona. 1953 return to France and 1954 acqui­si­tion of French cit­i­zen­ship. In 1976 Max Ernst died in Paris.
