Erwin REITER was born on Sep­tem­ber 25, 1933 in Hochkraml in Upper Aus­tria. From 1949 to 1953 he attend­ed the tech­ni­cal school for wood­work­ing in Hall­statt, then stud­ied sculp­ture at the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Vien­na under Fritz Wotru­ba from 1953 to 1958. Begin­ning in the 1950s, Reit­er began to cre­ate his own vocab­u­lary of forms with rib­bons. Char­ac­ter­is­tic of his work is the wave, the cur­rent that forms all his fig­ures, both in the pic­ture and in the sculp­ture. Reiter’s char­ac­ter­is­tic “lamel­lar fig­ures” appeared for the first time in 1960. In 1968 the artist fol­lowed an appoint­ment as a lec­tur­er at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Applied Arts in Vien­na with Wan­der Bertoni. From 1973 he taught sculp­ture at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Art and Indus­tri­al Design in Linz, where he retired in 2001. Erwin Reit­er is co-founder of the asso­ci­a­tion “Oberöster­re­ichis­che Schul­ga­lerie”. He received numer­ous prizes, includ­ing the Gold­en Füger Medal in 1958, the Prize of the City of Vien­na for the first exe­cu­tion of the “Platz der Men­schheit” in 1987, the Hein­rich Gleißn­er Prize in 1998 and the Cul­tur­al Prize of the Province of Upper Aus­tria in 1999. He took part in numer­ous exhi­bi­tions and exhi­bi­tion par­tic­i­pa­tions at home and abroad. In 1973 the artist was rep­re­sent­ed with his works at the São Paulo Bien­ni­al. Char­ac­ter­is­tic of Reiter’s work is the wave, the cur­rent that shapes all his fig­ures, both in the pic­ture and in the sculp­ture. The artist lived and worked in Jul­bach and in Vien­na.
