Ger­hart FRANKL was born in Vien­na on May 12, 1901. The auto­di­dact comes into con­tact with Carinthi­an mod­ernism through Anton Kolig. From 1922 he trav­els through France, Italy, Ger­many, Hol­land, and repeat­ed­ly to the Aus­tri­an and Swiss Alps. Fran­kl quick­ly achieved recog­ni­tion with his land­scapes, por­traits and still lifes. As ear­ly as 1930, the Neue Galerie in Vien­na devot­ed a com­pre­hen­sive exhi­bi­tion to him. In 1938 the fam­i­ly had to emi­grate to Lon­don. After the war Fran­kl returned to Vien­na, but found no con­nec­tion and moved again to Eng­land in 1949. In 1950 he received the Eng­lish cit­i­zen­ship. In 1965 Fran­kl accept­ed an invi­ta­tion as pro­fes­sor at the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Vien­na. On June 24, 1965, Ger­hart Fran­kl died of heart fail­ure in Vienna.
