Gia­co­mo MANZÙ was born in Berg­amo in 1908. 1919 Start of an appren­tice­ship as a carv­er, plas­ter­er and gilder. Dur­ing his mil­i­tary ser­vice in Verona, Manzù attend­ed evening cours­es at the Accad­e­mia Cig­naroli. From 1928 he worked as a free­lance artist. 1930 moved to Milan. 1934 trip to Rome. A vis­it to St. Peter and the sight of the Pope sit­ting between two car­di­nals impressed him great­ly and sacred motifs became a pre­dom­i­nant theme in his work, includ­ing the design of a door to St. Peter’s Basil­i­ca in Rome and the design of the main door of Salzburg Cathe­dral. In 1938 and 1956 he took part in the Venice Bien­nale. 1947 ret­ro­spec­tive of his works in the Palaz­zo Reale in Milan. 1954 teacher of sculp­ture at the Inter­na­tion­al Sum­mer Acad­e­my in Salzburg. Numer­ous hon­ors and exhi­bi­tions at home and abroad fol­low. Gia­co­mo Manzù died on Jan­u­ary 17, 1991 in Ardea near Rome. 1954 – first exhi­bi­tion in the Welz gallery.
