Giacomo MANZÙ was born in Bergamo in 1908. 1919 Start of an apprenticeship as a carver, plasterer and gilder. During his military service in Verona, Manzù attended evening courses at the Accademia Cignaroli. From 1928 he worked as a freelance artist. 1930 moved to Milan. 1934 trip to Rome. A visit to St. Peter and the sight of the Pope sitting between two cardinals impressed him greatly and sacred motifs became a predominant theme in his work, including the design of a door to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and the design of the main door of Salzburg Cathedral. In 1938 and 1956 he took part in the Venice Biennale. 1947 retrospective of his works in the Palazzo Reale in Milan. 1954 teacher of sculpture at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg. Numerous honors and exhibitions at home and abroad follow. Giacomo Manzù died on January 17, 1991 in Ardea near Rome. 1954 – first exhibition in the Welz gallery.
