Roland MARTIN was born in 1927 in Tut­tlin­gen, Baden-Würt­tem­berg, Ger­many. From 1943 to 1945 he served in the mil­i­tary as an air force helper. After his labor ser­vice and cap­tiv­i­ty, he stud­ied from 1946 to 1951 at the Bern­stein School in Glatt with Hans Lud­wig Pfeif­fer and Paul Käl­ber­er. The Bern­stein School, a for­mer monastery build­ing, served as an acad­e­my replace­ment from its foun­da­tion in 1946 to 1952/55, at the time of the French occu­pa­tion, since no art acad­e­mies had reopened after the war. In 1950 Roland Mar­tin was a stu­dent at the State Acad­e­my of Fine Arts Karl­sruhe, Freiburg branch in Freiburg im Breis­gau, with Wil­helm Ger­s­tel and from 1951 to 1952 he was a stu­dent of Fritz Nuss. Roland Mar­tin has been work­ing as a free­lance sculp­tor since 1952 and has since tak­en part in numer­ous solo exhi­bi­tions in Ger­many, Aus­tria and Switzer­land. By 1980 abstract reliefs and sculp­tures made of met­al and alu­minum were cre­at­ed. From the mid-1970s the artist turned increas­ing­ly to human fig­ures. He rep­re­sents social rela­tion­ships in groups of fig­ures. The fig­ures are cast in bronze, alu­minum or in Keramin (extra-hard, white stan­dard cast­ing com­pound in high qual­i­ty). Roland Mar­tin cre­at­ed numer­ous works, sculp­tures, foun­tains, ste­les, mosaics and glass win­dows for pub­lic spaces. In 2007 he received the cul­ture award of the city of Tut­tlin­gen. He is a mem­ber of the Kün­stler­bund Baden-Würt­tem­berg and a mem­ber of the Deutsch­er Kün­stler­bund in whose annu­al exhi­bi­tions he reg­u­lar­ly par­tic­i­pat­ed between 1964 and 1975. The artist lives and works in Tuttlingen.
