Roland MARTIN was born in 1927 in Tuttlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. From 1943 to 1945 he served in the military as an air force helper. After his labor service and captivity, he studied from 1946 to 1951 at the Bernstein School in Glatt with Hans Ludwig Pfeiffer and Paul Kälberer. The Bernstein School, a former monastery building, served as an academy replacement from its foundation in 1946 to 1952/55, at the time of the French occupation, since no art academies had reopened after the war. In 1950 Roland Martin was a student at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, Freiburg branch in Freiburg im Breisgau, with Wilhelm Gerstel and from 1951 to 1952 he was a student of Fritz Nuss. Roland Martin has been working as a freelance sculptor since 1952 and has since taken part in numerous solo exhibitions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. By 1980 abstract reliefs and sculptures made of metal and aluminum were created. From the mid-1970s the artist turned increasingly to human figures. He represents social relationships in groups of figures. The figures are cast in bronze, aluminum or in Keramin (extra-hard, white standard casting compound in high quality). Roland Martin created numerous works, sculptures, fountains, steles, mosaics and glass windows for public spaces. In 2007 he received the culture award of the city of Tuttlingen. He is a member of the Künstlerbund Baden-Württemberg and a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund in whose annual exhibitions he regularly participated between 1964 and 1975. The artist lives and works in Tuttlingen.
