Sean Scul­ly was born in Dublin in 1945. In 1949 the fam­i­ly moved to Lon­don, where he attend­ed Croy­don Col­lege of Art from 1965 to 1968. He then stud­ied paint­ing at New­cas­tle Uni­ver­si­ty in Eng­land until 1972 and at Har­vard Uni­ver­si­ty in the USA until 1972. The first solo exhi­bi­tions fol­lowed imme­di­ate­ly after his stud­ies. In 1975 the artist was giv­en a teach­ing posi­tion at Prince­ton Uni­ver­si­ty in New Jer­sey, where he taught until 1983. Scul­ly received Amer­i­can cit­i­zen­ship in 1983. In 1989 and 1993, his artis­tic work was award­ed the British Turn­er Prize. Scul­ly has been teach­ing paint­ing at the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Munich since 2002. He lives and works in New York, Barcelona and Mooseu­rach near Königs­dorf in Ger­many. In his paint­ing, the artist com­bines Euro­pean pic­to­r­i­al tra­di­tions with aes­thet­ic expe­ri­ences. Scul­ly works with ver­ti­cal and hor­i­zon­tal col­ored sur­faces, these are sub­ject to a strict com­po­si­tion and a clear struc­ture. In addi­tion to can­vas work, Scul­ly is also con­cerned with prints, which fas­ci­nate him with the vari­ety of expres­sive options.
