Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945. In 1949 the family moved to London, where he attended Croydon College of Art from 1965 to 1968. He then studied painting at Newcastle University in England until 1972 and at Harvard University in the USA until 1972. The first solo exhibitions followed immediately after his studies. In 1975 the artist was given a teaching position at Princeton University in New Jersey, where he taught until 1983. Scully received American citizenship in 1983. In 1989 and 1993, his artistic work was awarded the British Turner Prize. Scully has been teaching painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 2002. He lives and works in New York, Barcelona and Mooseurach near Königsdorf in Germany. In his painting, the artist combines European pictorial traditions with aesthetic experiences. Scully works with vertical and horizontal colored surfaces, these are subject to a strict composition and a clear structure. In addition to canvas work, Scully is also concerned with prints, which fascinate him with the variety of expressive options.
