Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923. After initially studying law, he began to paint himself in 1946. In Barcelona he received inspiration from the circle of young poets, writers and artists around the avant-garde magazine “Dau al Set”, which he founded in 1948. The first successful exhibitions in Barcelona in 1950 led him to a Paris scholarship from the French government. In his work, Tàpies condenses the material in his pictures, mixing sand and other materials into the oil paint. The painter creates rough, wall-like structures into which he scratches a meager repertoire of signs and collages materials. The first lithographs were made in 1959. From the 1960s onwards, Antoni Tàpies is internationally recognized. He has received numerous prizes and awards and was represented at the “Biennale” in Venice and the “documetna” in Kassel, among others.
Antoni Tàpies died in Barcelona in 2012. 2005 – first exhibition in the Welz gallery.
