Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923. After ini­tial­ly study­ing law, he began to paint him­self in 1946. In Barcelona he received inspi­ra­tion from the cir­cle of young poets, writ­ers and artists around the avant-garde mag­a­zine “Dau al Set”, which he found­ed in 1948. The first suc­cess­ful exhi­bi­tions in Barcelona in 1950 led him to a Paris schol­ar­ship from the French gov­ern­ment. In his work, Tàpies con­dens­es the mate­r­i­al in his pic­tures, mix­ing sand and oth­er mate­ri­als into the oil paint. The painter cre­ates rough, wall-like struc­tures into which he scratch­es a mea­ger reper­toire of signs and col­lages mate­ri­als. The first lith­o­graphs were made in 1959. From the 1960s onwards, Antoni Tàpies is inter­na­tion­al­ly rec­og­nized. He has received numer­ous prizes and awards and was rep­re­sent­ed at the “Bien­nale” in Venice and the “doc­umet­na” in Kas­sel, among others.
Antoni Tàpies died in Barcelona in 2012. 2005 – first exhi­bi­tion in the Welz gallery.
