Eduard ANGELI was born on July 15, 1942 in Vienna. From 1960 to 1965 he studied painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Robin Christian Andersen. In 1965 he moved to Istanbul and from 1967 to 1971 was a visiting professor for painting at the Academy of Applied Arts in Istanbul. Angeli experimented with different techniques. Until 1970 he dealt with war issues in Turkish history. In the following years he mainly worked with charcoal on paper and acrylic on canvas. In 1971 Angeli returned to Vienna. From 1974 the artist worked on monumental compositions and dealt intensively with the materiality and the painterly treatment of surfaces. From 1980 he created his garden pictures. The subject of “water” appears again and again in his works and became the subject of the picture in 1983/1984. From 1984 Angeli developed new geometric principles in his pictures. Horizontal and vertical bars and poles become the supporting framework of the picture surface. Angeli’s night pictures were created in the 1990s and 2000s. At the beginning of 2000 the artist worked on a series of “stage pictures”, no drafts for stage constructions, but pictures depicting spatial situations. Since 1971 Eduard Angeli has been regularly represented in exhibitions at home and abroad and has received numerous honors and awards for his artistic work, including the 2003 Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna. From 2001 to 2019 the artist also lived in Venice and the motif of the lagoon and the city is incorporated into Angeli’s work. Angeli lives and works in Vienna.
