Gunter DAMISCH was born on May 20, 1958 in Steyr. From 1978 to 1983 he com­plet­ed his stud­ies at the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Vien­na (mas­ter class Max Melch­er and Arnulf Rain­er). Gunter Damisch became known in the area of the “Neue Wilde” in the 1980s. From 1992 the artist taught at the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Vien­na (mas­ter class for graph­ics). Gunter Damisch has received numer­ous hon­ors and awards, includ­ing the Römerquelle Art Prize (1983), the Otto Mauer Prize and Max Weil­er Prize (1985), the Karl Röss­ing Prize (1991), the City of Vien­na Prize (1995), the Anton Fais­tauer Prize Prize for paint­ing from the State of Salzburg (1996), the prize at the 2nd Inter­na­tion­al Graph­ic Tri­en­ni­al in Prague and the Upper Aus­tri­an State Cul­ture Prize for Graph­ics (1998). Irre­spec­tive of his pre­oc­cu­pa­tion with print­mak­ing tech­niques, Damisch cre­at­ed an exten­sive painter­ly oeu­vre as well as sculp­tur­al works in wood, ceram­ics and bronze. The fig­ures “flamm­lers” and spiky arche­types he devel­oped are often found in his work. Gunter Damisch dies on April 30, 2016 in Vienna.
