Gunter DAMISCH was born on May 20, 1958 in Steyr. From 1978 to 1983 he completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (master class Max Melcher and Arnulf Rainer). Gunter Damisch became known in the area of the “Neue Wilde” in the 1980s. From 1992 the artist taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (master class for graphics). Gunter Damisch has received numerous honors and awards, including the Römerquelle Art Prize (1983), the Otto Mauer Prize and Max Weiler Prize (1985), the Karl Rössing Prize (1991), the City of Vienna Prize (1995), the Anton Faistauer Prize Prize for painting from the State of Salzburg (1996), the prize at the 2nd International Graphic Triennial in Prague and the Upper Austrian State Culture Prize for Graphics (1998). Irrespective of his preoccupation with printmaking techniques, Damisch created an extensive painterly oeuvre as well as sculptural works in wood, ceramics and bronze. The figures “flammlers” and spiky archetypes he developed are often found in his work. Gunter Damisch dies on April 30, 2016 in Vienna.
