John­ny FRIEDLAENDER was born in Pless / Upper Sile­sia in 1912. From 1928 atten­dance at the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Bres­lau, mas­ter class for paint­ing with Otto Mueller. First drafts for etch­ings and lith­o­graphs emerge. 1930 relo­ca­tion to Dres­den and first par­tic­i­pa­tion in exhi­bi­tions. 1933 intern­ment. 1936 escape and emi­gra­tion to Czecho­slo­va­kia. After an exhi­bi­tion in The Hague, the artist left Hol­land and reached Paris as a polit­i­cal refugee. In 1939 there was anoth­er arrest and intern­ment. 1944 return to Paris. From now on he devotes him­self more and more to etch­ing. 1952 accep­tance of French cit­i­zen­ship. In 1966 he took up paint­ing again, the first pic­tures were tak­en since 1940. 1966/67 pro­fes­sor­ship at the Salzburg Sum­mer Acad­e­my. After a live­ly exhi­bi­tion activ­i­ty and numer­ous trips, the artist died in Paris in 1992. 1977 — first exhi­bi­tion in the gallery Welz.
