John­ny FRIEDLAENDER was born in Pless / Upper Sile­sia in 1912. From 1928, he attend­ed the Acad­e­my of Fine Arts in Bres­lau, mas­ter class for paint­ing with Otto Mueller. He cre­at­ed his first designs for etch­ings and lith­o­graphs. In 1930, he moved to Dres­den and his first exhi­bi­tions fol­lowed. 1933 intern­ment. 1936 escape and emi­gra­tion to Czecho­slo­va­kia. After an exhi­bi­tion in The Hague, the artist left Hol­land and reached Paris as a polit­i­cal refugee. In 1939, he was arrest­ed and interned again. He returned to Paris in 1944. From then on, he devot­ed him­self more and more to etch­ing. He was grant­ed French cit­i­zen­ship in 1952. He took up paint­ing again in 1966, pro­duc­ing his first paint­ings since 1940. In 1966/67 he was appoint­ed pro­fes­sor at the Salzburg Sum­mer Acad­e­my. After a busy exhi­bi­tion sched­ule and numer­ous trips, the artist died in Paris in 1992. 1977 — first exhi­bi­tion in the gallery Welz.
