Max PEIFFER WATENPHUL was born in Wefer­lin­gen / Sax­ony-Anhalt in 1896. From 1914 to 1918, he stud­ied med­i­cine and sub­se­quent­ly law. He com­plet­ed his doc­tor­ate in Würzburg on canon law. From 1919 to 1921, he attend­ed the Bauhaus in Weimar (pre­lim­i­nary course by Johannes Itten) and became friends with Schwit­ters, Schlem­mer, Ger­hard Mar­cks and Else Lasker-Schüler. From 1922, he under­took his first trips to Salzburg, Vien­na and Italy. From 1927 to 1931, he taught at the Folk­wangschule in Essen. From 1933 he spent most of his time in Italy. From 1941 to 1943, he taught at the tex­tile school in Krefeld and from 1943 to 1944 at the School of Applied Arts in Salzburg. He fled to Venice in 1946 and moved to Rome in 1958. In 1965, he was appoint­ed a mem­ber of the Bavar­i­an Acad­e­my of Sci­ences and Arts. Max Peif­fer Waten­phul died in Rome in 1976. 1950 — first par­tic­i­pa­tion in an exhi­bi­tion, 1963 — first solo exhi­bi­tion at Galerie Welz.
