Max PEIFFER WATENPHUL was born in Weferlingen / Saxony-Anhalt in 1896. From 1914 to 1918, he studied medicine and subsequently law. He completed his doctorate in Würzburg on canon law. From 1919 to 1921, he attended the Bauhaus in Weimar (preliminary course by Johannes Itten) and became friends with Schwitters, Schlemmer, Gerhard Marcks and Else Lasker-Schüler. From 1922, he undertook his first trips to Salzburg, Vienna and Italy. From 1927 to 1931, he taught at the Folkwangschule in Essen. From 1933 he spent most of his time in Italy. From 1941 to 1943, he taught at the textile school in Krefeld and from 1943 to 1944 at the School of Applied Arts in Salzburg. He fled to Venice in 1946 and moved to Rome in 1958. In 1965, he was appointed a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Max Peiffer Watenphul died in Rome in 1976. 1950 — first participation in an exhibition, 1963 — first solo exhibition at Galerie Welz.
