Walter PICHLER was born in Deutschnofen (South Tyrol) in 1936. From 1952 to 1955, he attended the trade school in Innsbruck. He then studied graphic design at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna until 1959 and produced his first sculptural works. In 1960, he spent a year in Paris. From 1962 to 1969, he worked on architecture, design and object art. In 1963, his first exhibition took place at the “Galerie St. Stephan” (with Hans Hollein) and he spent extended periods in New York and Mexico. In 1972, Pichler acquired a farm in St. Martin an der Raab in southern Burgenland and extensions and conversions were built for his sculptures. In 1985, the artist was awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize. In 1990, he created the Gate to the Garden for the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna. Walter Pichler was a sculptor, architect, draftsman, book designer and object artist. He made many sketches, drawings and models and often combined materials that are difficult to combine. Time was an important material for him, on an equal footing with materials such as plastic, clay, wood, lead, tin and zinc. From 1963 exhibitions and participation in exhibitions at home and abroad. Walter Pichler died on July 16, 2012 in Vienna. 2018 – first exhibition in the gallery Welz.
