Drago Julius PRELOG was born in 1939 in Celje, Slovenia, as Karl Julius Prelog. In 1944 the family moved to Upper Styria. From 1954 to 1958 he graduated from the Bundesgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) in Graz (Department of Decorative Painting). From 1958 to 1962 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (Prof. A.P. Gütersloh). Since 1958 the artist used the artist name Drago J. Prelog. From 1969 to 1979 followed numerous teaching assignments for painting, from 1974 to 1997 for lettering and lettering design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Since the 1950s Drago J. Prelog has taken part in numerous exhibitions, participations in exhibitions and art fairs at home and abroad. “In the early works (1959) Prelogs, dissolving clusters of lines push from the center to the edge of the picture (CENTRAL FORMATIONS). In the SKRIPTURAL works that followed, the pictorial action spread out over the entire surface; any focal points of composition were replaced by structure and rhythm. In the UMLAUFBILDERN, begun in the 1970s, the action is concentrated along the edge of the picture. In the SKIN and BULL PICTURES the paint crusts protrude towards the viewer. Intermediate sections of the work, such as the MOUNTAIN, “STEFFL” and PROFILE PICTURES, are by no means to be understood as conventional images, but rather as pictograms. The relationship of the pictorial event to the edge of the picture, ritual elements and a distinctly pictographic conception of the picture determine Prelog’s work. The many years of dealing with the subject of writing as a result of his teaching activities finally led to the development of the “PERSONAL ALPHABET” as a pictorial theme. In 1986 Prelog developed his own printmaking technique, prelography.” https://www.prelog.at/biographie/ Drago J. Prelog has received numerous honours, awards and distinctions. His works are represented in museums and collections at home and abroad. The artist dies unexpectedly on 11 March 2020 in Vienna. 2021 — first exhibition at Galerie Welz.
