Emil SCHUMACHER was born in Hagen in Westphalia in 1912. In 1932, he studied at the Dortmund School of Arts and Crafts. From 1935 he worked as a freelance painter. The artists’ association “junger westen” was founded in 1947. From 1955 onwards, he took part in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. From 1958 to 1960 he was a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg and from 1966 to 1977 at the Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe. From 1967 to 1968 he was a visiting professor at the Minneapolis School of Art. From 1968 he was a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and from 1982 a member of the Order “Pour le Mérite” for Science and Art. In 1985, Schumacher was a guest of honor at the German Academy in Rome. In 1991, he held a guest professorship at the Concorso Superiore Internazionale del Disegno in Como. From 1999 he was a member of the Saxon Academy of Arts in Dresden. Emil Schumacher was awarded numerous prizes and honors and died in 1999 in San José, Ibiza. 2007 – first exhibition in the gallery Welz.
