Emil SCHUMACHER was born in Hagen in West­phalia in 1912. In 1932, he stud­ied at the Dort­mund School of Arts and Crafts. From 1935 he worked as a free­lance painter. The artists’ asso­ci­a­tion “junger west­en” was found­ed in 1947. From 1955 onwards, he took part in numer­ous exhi­bi­tions in Ger­many and abroad. From 1958 to 1960 he was a pro­fes­sor at the Hochschule für Bildende Kün­ste in Ham­burg and from 1966 to 1977 at the Staatliche Akademie der bilden­den Kün­ste in Karl­sruhe. From 1967 to 1968 he was a vis­it­ing pro­fes­sor at the Min­neapo­lis School of Art. From 1968 he was a mem­ber of the Akademie der Kün­ste in Berlin and from 1982 a mem­ber of the Order “Pour le Mérite” for Sci­ence and Art. In 1985, Schu­mach­er was a guest of hon­or at the Ger­man Acad­e­my in Rome. In 1991, he held a guest pro­fes­sor­ship at the Con­cor­so Supe­ri­ore Inter­nazionale del Dis­eg­no in Como. From 1999 he was a mem­ber of the Sax­on Acad­e­my of Arts in Dres­den. Emil Schu­mach­er was award­ed numer­ous prizes and hon­ors and died in 1999 in San José, Ibiza. 2007 – first exhi­bi­tion in the gallery Welz.
