Helmut SWOBODA, born on 1 January 1958 in Amstetten/NÖ, graduated from the Höhere Graphische Bundeslehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna from 1975 to 1979. From 1979 to 1984 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (master class Wolfgang Hollegha). Nature is a source of inspiration for Helmut Swoboda. His painting shows the roughness of the mountain landscapes that inspire the artist. In his recurring motifs he tries to reproduce the movements of water, to take up the rhythm of water and transfer it to the canvas, working with brushes, brooms, sponges, rags and materials he finds in nature. Swoboda’s art lives from the dialectic between the reference to nature and the autonomy of the sometimes quite monochrome condensed image. (Peter Weiermair) Since 1984 the artist has taken part in exhibitions, exhibition participations and art fairs at home and abroad and has received numerous honours, prizes and awards, including the “trend art spectrum” prize (1985), the Förderpreis für bildende Kunst, Land Niederösterreich (1988), the Sandoz Art Prize (1995) and the Culture Prize of the City of Amstetten (1998). Helmut Swoboda lives and works in Amstetten and Vienna. 1999 – first exhibition in the gallery Welz.
