Friedrich M. Welz took over the Würthle Gallery in Vienna in 1938. In the 1940s, he organized and curated exhibitions in Vienna and Salzburg with works by Alfred Kubin, Anton Mahringer, Michael Neder and Anton Steinhart, among others. Welz curated the exhibition celebrating the 100th birthday of Hans Markart at the Residenz in Salzburg. He acquired works of art for the Landesgalerie and expanded the art holdings of the Kleßheim and Leopoldskron palaces. Friedrich M. Welz was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944 and interned after the end of the war in 1945 until 1947. In the post-war period, the gallery was under provisional administration. Restitutions followed from 1948.
